Questions
Fatigue is a symptom, not a disease, and many different conditions, medicines, and habits can cause it. Common contributors include sleep problems, stress, anemia, thyroid problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and depression or anxiety. Thyroid causes are covered under hypothyroidism, and sleep and stress under stress management.
A health care provider should evaluate fatigue that does not get better after several weeks. The provider typically asks about sleep, daily activities, appetite, exercise, and medicines, does a physical exam, and may order lab tests. Fatigue with chest pain, shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, vision problems, or thoughts of self-harm calls for emergency care instead of a routine visit.
The cost depends on which labs are ordered, such as iron studies or thyroid tests, and on which lab bills for them. Visits are cash-based, and some labs can be run through insurance at a conventional lab. To ask what a visit would involve, book a discovery call.
Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia, and mild cases may cause no symptoms. Fatigue, dizziness, cold hands and feet, and pale skin can be signs. Blood loss is one cause, including bleeding in the digestive tract (see gut health). Iron deficiency is checked with a blood test covering the complete blood count, hemoglobin, blood iron, and ferritin (a measure of stored iron). Iron levels that are too low or too high can cause health concerns.
Fatigue that has no clear cause, starts suddenly, or comes with weight loss is worth bringing to a health care provider. Even without those signs, tiredness that has not improved after several weeks should be checked. A fatigue diary can show patterns in energy levels, and a wellness check is one place to review them.
