Questions
Irregular periods, hot flashes and night sweats, trouble sleeping, mood changes, and vaginal dryness are common signs of perimenopause. These symptoms overlap with many other conditions, which is one reason they can be hard to recognize. Perimenopause usually begins in the mid-40s, and pregnancy is still possible while periods continue.
No, hormone blood tests are not required, and hormone levels move so much during perimenopause that a single result can mislead. Results are read together with symptoms, age, and medical history. Some hormone panels also include a thyroid test, which is covered under hypothyroidism, and hormone imbalance testing follows the same rule of reading results in context.
The cost depends on which hormones are tested and whether testing is repeated. Estrogen levels change over time, so repeat testing may be needed to see a trend. The laboratory bills for its tests on its own, apart from the visit. The first step is a discovery call.
Regular exercise, good sleep habits, less alcohol and caffeine, and not smoking are commonly recommended during the transition, along with a diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Evidence for how well some of these ease hot flashes is limited, and nothing stops perimenopause itself. Sleep and stress management are among the lifestyle areas covered.
Perimenopause usually lasts roughly 4 to 8 years, with about 4 years on average. It can begin as early as the mid-30s or as late as the mid-50s. Menopause is reached after 12 months in a row without a period, typically between ages 45 and 55. A wellness check covers health, history, and lifestyle more broadly.
